UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Exam Pattern 2026

The UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Examination has three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination and Personality Test or Interview. This page explains the selection route, objective and descriptive papers, negative marking and key instructions.

Three stages of CGSE

Stage I is the Combined Geo-Scientist Preliminary Examination with two objective papers. Stage II is the Combined Geo-Scientist Main Examination with three descriptive papers. Stage III is the Personality Test or Interview. Preliminary and Main marks count towards final merit as prescribed in the rules.

The 2026 notice scheduled Prelims for 8 February 2026 and Mains for 20 and 21 June 2026. Candidates qualifying Prelims are admitted to Mains, and candidates qualifying Mains are called for the Personality Test.

Preliminary examination

The Preliminary examination is a screening test with two objective-type papers. The papers are conducted on OMR sheets. The exact paper subjects, marks, duration, qualifying requirements and category-specific scheme must be checked in the official notice and rules.

There is negative marking for wrong answers in objective papers. Practise reading technical questions quickly, selecting questions carefully, managing calculations and transferring answers accurately to the OMR sheet.

Main examination

The Main examination is descriptive and has three papers connected with the selected scientific discipline or category. It tests conceptual clarity, technical accuracy, calculations, diagrams, interpretation and the ability to present a structured scientific answer.

Practise answers with definitions, principles, equations, assumptions, labelled diagrams, units, examples and a concise conclusion. For geology and hydrogeology, maps, sections and aquifer diagrams can improve clarity. For geophysics and chemistry, show steps and relevant formulae or mechanisms.

Personality Test

The Personality Test assesses scientific understanding, communication, judgement, professional awareness and public-service suitability. Prepare your academic subjects, dissertation or project, fieldwork, laboratory work, current earth-science developments, groundwater issues, mineral resources, environmental hazards and the organisation connected with your preferred post.

Vacancy and post choice

The 2026 notice listed approximately 78 vacancies, subject to alteration, across GSI and CGWB posts. A candidate may apply for one or both categories if eligible. The application must match the qualification and post conditions. Service or post allocation is not guaranteed merely by appearing in the examination.

Exam-day rules

Download the e-admission certificate and check the centre, reporting time and instructions. Reach at least 30 minutes before the session because late entry is not allowed. Carry the required photo ID and permitted stationery. Do not carry mobile phones, smart watches, Bluetooth devices, cameras, storage media or other prohibited electronic items.

For OMR papers, follow the booklet instructions, verify roll number and test-booklet details, and use the required pen. For descriptive papers, plan time across all questions, label diagrams and review units, signs and unanswered sub-parts.

Preparation by stage

For Prelims, revise facts and concepts, solve objective questions and take timed mocks. For Mains, write technical answers every week and build diagrams, maps, derivations and case-based explanations. For the Personality Test, revise your academic record and connect science with water security, exploration, hazards, climate and public policy.
